CRIME REPORT

November 3, 2003

Residents,

Auto thefts will not be included in the crime report for the time being as 22 Division implements a new crime-tracking program.

Generally the smash and grab events have slowed, that is, break and enter to obtain keys for luxury cars. Make sure those keys and garage door remotes are not readily accessible from doors or windows.

Did you know that a crafty criminal with your Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) could have a key made at the dealership? The dealers are required to ask for identification but this does not always happen. The V.I.N. number is visible from outside the vehicle at the lower edge of the windshield on the driver’s side.

An easy solution is to conceal the V.I.N. from the inside; I do this with my parking permit. Some car alarms can be silenced with a key only. Try entering your car with the key and the alarm active.

22 Division is implementing H.E.A.T. (Help Eliminate Auto Theft). There will be a coordinated effort, starting November 3RD, right across the division focusing on this problem.

The “auto dialer” is working well and will provide details of crime events in your neighbourhood . It is an automated telephone dialing system with a taped message.

Applications are available at 22 Division sub-station, 791 Islington Avenue.
